Impacted tooth are tooth that have not erupted normally in the mouth. The most common reason for it is because of a lack of space in the mouth. In most cases, they have no function in the mouth since they are out of occlusion. Therefore, it is advisable to remove them, the earlier the better, in order to avoid complications in the future.

Odontectomy is the dental procedure entailing the removal, usually with surgical intervention, of impacted tooth, usually the third molars. It is one of the most common minor oral surgical procedures in dentistry.

The most common teeth to be impacted are:

  • third molars (or wisdom tooth) - lowerupper
      • Third molars are also called wisdom teeth since they usually come out during the 18th birthday, which according to ancient wisdom, is enough years for one person to gain enough experience to be considered "wise."
  • upper canine tooth
      • Since the canines are very important foundational tooth crucial to the shape and anatomy of the face, most dentists / orthodontists would attempt to surgically expose and orthodontically align them into their proper position.

  • premolars - lowerupper
  • second molars - lowerupper
  • supernumerary teeth (teeth beyond the normal 38 teeth in adulthood)
    • mesiodens - literally means a tooth in the middle
    • supernumerary incisor, premolar, or canine
      • Supernumerary teeth literally are just a waste of space. They can only be considered "useful" if they are orthodontically aligned to replace a badly decayed tooth located above/below them.

Since they are impacted, they have no function and only take up space in the mouth. They are also usually discovered via dental x-rays, so having a dental check-up with x-ray examination done during the early teenage years are important in order to avert possible complications in the future.

For part 2, common reasons or indications for odontectomy will be discussed, so please stay tuned!
